Volunteer Action – inspiring millions

The 10th anniversary of the International Year of Volunteers, first launched in 2001, offers an exceptional opportunity to join a global effort to reinvigorate the spirit of volunteerism.

Many entities, from all over the world, are already planning an exciting array of events throughout 2011 to showcase the diversity, breadth and depth of volunteering worldwide, to raise the profile of volunteering and to mobilize many more volunteers.

 The IYV+10 logo is now ready!  
After many rounds of consultation within UNV and with stakeholders, the final version of the IYV+10 logo is now ready! We will use the dark orange logo, which looks quite like the one used in 2001, but with a change in the shape of the letters inside the UN wreath. For those who are unable to print in colour, a black and white version is also available in the six official UN languages.

 Innovations in Civic Participation: Interview with Simona Costanzo Sow, Project Manager for IYV+10 by Sarah Budriunas
Innovations in Civic Participation (ICP) recently interviewed the Project Manager for the tenth anniversary of the International Year of Volunteering (IYV+10), Dr. Simona Costanzo Sow.  They discussed the upcoming celebration of IYV+10 and the ways in which various actors can get involved, specifically ways the youth can become better engaged in celebrating IYV+10. With the recent launch of the International Year of Youth, Dr. Costanzo Sow stressed the importance of globally empowering young people and encouraging them take ownership for their society in order to work towards change.  Read article

The four pillars of IYV
In view of the 2015 target date of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), IYV+ 10 offers an opportunity to celebrate but also to assess the progress made towards achieving the four pillars of IYV:

Recognition: acknowledging the value of volunteerism to society all over the world and the connection between volunteerism and the MDGs

Facilitation: ensuring that the maximum number of people from the broadest range of backgrounds have access to volunteer opportunities

Networking: fostering the exchange of experience and strengthening partnerships among different entities promoting and implementing volunteer projects

Promotion: promoting inclusive volunteerism representative of the diverse groups in society

With IYV+10 fast approaching, keep  planning creative, enterprising and innovative events to inspire even more people to get involved in indispensable work carried out by volunteers throughout the world.
