UNV launch book on volunteering in Bangladesh on IVD
21 December 2002

Dhaka: A new resource on volunteerism -- "Volunteers in Bangladesh" -- was launched today by the Youth and Sports Secretary Jamal Uddin at the Department of Youth Development Auditorium in the capital Dhaka in celebration of International Volunteer Day (IVD).

The publication, which includes information about the history and evolution of volunteerism in Bangladesh, insights from leading local volunteers and briefs on international volunteer organizations working in the country, was prepared by United Nations Volunteers (UNV) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

"Bangladesh is known to have a very active culture of volunteerism," UNDP Resident Representative Jorgen Lissner says in his article in the book. The country, he adds, "can play a positive role in international volunteering. [It] should be keener on sending out volunteers than bringing them in".

The book also urges the Bangladesh Government to establish a legal framework to support volunteers and volunteer work.

IVD was commemorated with the theme "People to People Assistance". It included activities such as an eye camp where free eye consultations and surgery were performed by volunteer ophthalmologists in the village of Dhirgirpar, hygiene and sanitation awareness given by volunteers from local non-government organizations (NGOs) in Ghorshavo village and other volunteer workers worked as traffic controllers in Dhaka.

The Association of International Volunteer Service Organizations in Bangladesh (AIVSOB) organized the event. AIVSOB's members include the Korean Overseas Volunteers/International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), Volunteer Service Organization, the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), UNV, the Service Civil International (SCI) Bangladesh, Peace Corps, the Japanese Agency for International Cooperation (JICA), United Nations Information Centre and the Government National Committee for IVD.
