Bhutan hosts tug-of-war contest, highlights MDGs on IVD
07 December 2002

Thimphu: Bhutan celebrated International Volunteer Day (IVD) with a tug-of-war contest organized by the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) and the Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOVC).

Fourteen teams from different schools, government and non-governmental organizations participated in the competition at the Changlimithang Stadium ground in the capital Thimphu.

A central theme of this year’s IVD was to encourage volunteers and volunteer organizations to play significant roles to help achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The MDGs are set of objectives to ensure that development is achieved and shared by all. It includes halving the number of people with income of less than one dollar a day and of those suffering from hunger and lack of safe drinking water and to ensure equal access to all levels of education for girls and boys and primary schooling for children everywhere.

The goals are part of the Millennium Declaration that was adopted by world leaders at the Millennium Summit in September 2000.
