Brazil's IVD celebration focuses on youth

Minas Gerais: The United Nations Volunteer (UNV) programme, together with local organizations Fundação Conscienciarte and Fundação Peiropolis, today held workshops for youth volunteers on volunteering and values to celebrate International Volunteer Day (IVD).

Workshops on "Youth Pioneering and Volunteering" or "Encontro Regional de Protagonismo Juvenil" were attended by more than 300 young people between the ages 17 and 21. The activities aimed to encourage the youth to become active volunteers through teaching of values on volunteering. It was held in Paracatu, Patos de Minas, Uberaba and Uberlândia cities in the region of Minas Gerais, located 300 kilometres from the capital Brasilia.

Other IVD activities include blood donations and poetry writing contests both participated by more than 500 youth in Minas Gerais and Mato Grosso do Sul.

The events were organized by Fundação Conscienciarte, a non-governmental organization working with youth and addresses youth-related issues, and Fundação Peiropolis, an organization that provides training programmes for youth educators and promotes values of peace and non-violence.
