Lula puts volunteerism in the MDG agenda on International Volunteer Day
25 September 2003
Sao Paolo: Graced by Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Brazil’s President, 80 leaders representing organizations from around the world will convene in Brazil for an event titled, ‘The First International Meeting on Volunteerism and the UN’s Millennium Development Goals (MDG)’. The event will coincide with International Volunteer's Day on 5 December 2003. The main objective of the meeting is to provide a forum for presentations and discussions pertaining to the role of the volunteer in the MDGs from the perspective of the public and private sectors as well as of civil society. Coordinators also aim to shore up the global volunteer networks created during the International Year of Volunteers 2001. Brazil’s House of Representatives, Federal Senate, and Foreign Affairs Ministry will host the event. The initiative is being organized by Faça Parte – Brazil’s Volunteer Institute, in partnership with the United Nations, through UNV, UNDP and UNESCO.
