El Salvador declares IVD as National Day of Volunteers
05 December 2002

San Salvador: The Legislative Assembly of El Salvador today declared that 5 December -- the International Volunteer Day -- is now to be recognized as the National Day of Volunteers.

The declaration, which was discussed at a Plenary session on 31 October, was a result of the efforts that all volunteering organizations undertook since the International Year of Volunteers (IYV) 2001. Through this resolution, the Legislative Assembly aims to contribute to the recognition and promotion of the work that thousands of volunteers carry out across the country.

Having a National Day of Volunteers presents an opportunity for all the volunteer-involved organizations in El Salvador to celebrate together and to encourage people to donate part of their time and resources to assist the poor, the sick and the elderly.
