Volunteers to be awarded for their contribution in Fiji

Suva: In Fiji the International Volunteer Day committee has planned a march, led by a brass band ending at the Sukuna Park where there will be speeches by the Lord Mayor of Suva and the United Nations Development Programme Resident Representative Peter Witham.
After the formalities, volunteer groups will proceed to various venues to clean up and plant vegetables for selected beneficiary groups. In the evening a volunteer award ceremony will be held in recognition of the contributions of volunteers throughout Fiji.
In Tonga and Vanuatu IVD will also be commemorated this year. In Tonga a public meeting has been planned where there will be addresses by various volunteer involving organisations, faith based organisations, UNV and the UN contact point. There will also be a display showing the work of volunteers.
In Vanuatu, there will be a parade at the sea front where there will be speeches by different organisations in the morning. In the afternoon there will be entertainment activities by different volunteer groups. These include the Peace Corps, VSO, CUSO, JICA, UNV,AVI, youth groups, faith-based organisations and traditional dances.
The IVD committee is comprised of representatives from government agencies, civil society organizations, volunteer-involving organisations, e.g., JICA, Peace Corps, KOICA, Australian Youth Ambassadors, Red Cross Society, Green Peace and faith based organizations.
