Guatemala turns dumping ground into park on IVD

Guatemala City: International Volunteer Day (IVD) was celebrated in Guatemala by involving more 400 volunteers by converting a refuse dump into an ecological park.

The activity was held in San Jose las Rosas, Mixco, near the capital Guatemala City, led by the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) Programme, the local neighbourhood group and volunteers. It was also attended by the city Mayor Fritz García-Gallont and representatives from the government organization Coordinadora Nacional de Reducción de Desastres (CONRED).

The volunteers picked up trash, cut weed, planted trees and painted the equipment of the children’s playground. The activity finished with a ceremony led by the city Mayor. Mayor Garcia-Gallont also presented a plate to the representative from the neighborhood committee.
