International Volunteer Day 2008 will be celebrated this year in Haiti in the city of Gonaïves around the theme: 'Environment protection and disaster management and preparedness'. The theme was selected based on the fact that hurricanes that visit the Caribbean almost every, harshly hit the city of Gonaïves last September.  Until now, most of the population has been busy removing the mud all around the city.

It against this background that the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme in Haiti in partnership with Terre des Jeunes, Hands in Disaster and other local NGOs have mobilized the community to rehabilitate and build the school garden of Ekol du Bisantnè a high school of 2000 students in Gonaïves.

The main activity is the rehabilitation of the school garden from 16 November to 30 November. The official ceremony will be held at the school on 5 December. The programme includes:

-        Tree planting in the school garden
-        Round table discussion on the disaster management and preparedness
