Young European volunteers are meeting this week to discuss the future of volunteering and its role in promoting participation and cultural awareness vis-à-vis the impending enlargement of the European Union in a conference held in Budapest.
The "Youth Volunteer Fair", a six-day conference, is gathering individual volunteers, government officials, international and local volunteer agencies and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) from eastern and western Europe to tackle the sustainability of existing volunteer programmes and to create legal frameworks that favour volunteer promotion in future EU member states.
Organized by the Association for Voluntary Service Organization (AVSO), the conference also features training sessions for volunteers to strengthen their relations with governments, donor countries and funding agencies.
