Japan’s largest alliance of volunteer organizations, the National Network of Organizations Promoting Volunteerism (NNOPV), will mark International Volunteer Day with a week-long celebration and the “Volunteering Fiesta 2003” event which will take place on 5 December.
The Fiesta will be held at the D-Cross, an event space in the Mitsubishi Electricity HQ Building in Tokyo. Around 500 people from the different sectors of Japanese society are expected to attend the Volunteering Fiesta.
Ms. Junko Tabei, a Japanese environmental activist who has reached the summit of Mount Everest, and Ms. Konno Misako, UNDP Goodwill Ambassador and actress, are expected to grace this occasion.
The Volunteering Fiesta will showcase a live mini-concert featuring Japanese performing artists and musicians like the duo Cousins. There will be video messages from Japanese celebrities who support volunteer activities. An information booth will be set-up for the public to inquire about volunteering opportunities. In addition, the public will be asked to write their ideas about volunteerism or a message to volunteers on cards that will be hung on a ‘message tree’.
Moreover, to publicize IVD, a proposal paper on social support for volunteer actions in Japan and posters will be distributed to the municipal volunteer promotion centers; academic institutions that engaged volunteerism; and companies with a social contribution division.
On 6 December, a commemorative symposium on IVD will be held at the Keidanren Hall in Tokyo. NNOPV expects around 400 people to attend this symposium.
