Honorary awards, volunteer fair and free medical consultations mark IVD in Jordan
21 January 2009

Amman, Jordan: With the slogan 'Hand in Hand for a Better Life', International Volunteer Day (IVD) was celebrated in Jordan under the patronage of H.R.H. Princess Basma bint Talal.

Facilitated by the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme in cooperation with the IVD 2008 National Steering Committee, Jordan’s event included several activities that demonstrated the importance of volunteerism and aimed at encouraging volunteerism around the Kingdom.

The opening ceremony included statements by H.R.H. Princess Basma bint Talal and Mr. Luc Stevens, the UN Resident Coordinator in Jordan.  Through their statements they paid tribute to the millions of people around the world and in Jordan who contribute their time and efforts to help tackle some of the world’s most pressing challenges, and whose efforts often go unrecognized.

20 volunteers were honoured during the opening ceremony of the event.  These volunteers were selected by their organizations in recognition of their active provision of offering their expertise in support of development initiatives to improve the lives of others through volunteer activities.

The event which was opened for public included a Volunteer Fair that offered different opportunities for those who are willing to volunteer their energy, time and skills to address Jordan’s development challenges and build up their own knowledge and experience.  In addition, and as part of the promotion for volunteerism, free basic medical diagnoses and consultations were provided by the Ministry of Health.

The 4 December event was only the opening of nationwide activities that took place around the Kingdom.  These activities went beyond Amman to all 12 Governorates and included awareness-raising sessions on volunteerism through the centres of Ministry of Social Development.

The free basic medical examinations and consultations were also provided through the health centres of the Ministry of Health.

Today’s event was generously sponsored by ZAIN, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Office of the UN Resident Coordinator and UNV in Jordan.
