International Volunteer Day 2002 in Kazakhstan
05 December 2002

Almaty: International Volunteer Day (IVD) 2002 in Kazakhstan was celebrated around the country by a range of volunteer organisations. These organisations held open days in their local communities, inviting the public, local officials, journalists and others to find out more about their activities. They also held local celebrations with their volunteers, including parties and concerts. In the week or so leading up to the Day, many organizations organized voluntary actions in their communities, to highlight their activities.

The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) Programme Officer in Kazakhstan, Julian Hansen and the Executive Director of Soros Volunteer House Kazakhstan, Ms Nazilya Birzhanova, appeared on a breakfast talk show on a national TV station on the morning of 5 December, explaining the value of volunteering in Kazakhstan and how local people could get involved. UNV also organized for two feature articles about volunteering to be written in two national newspapers with wide circulation. Regional volunteer organizations also arranged for local media coverage of their own events. The following Saturday, a student debate on the programme "City of the Future" was filmed and broadcast on the main state television channel, Khabar, to debate the value of volunteerism for Kazakhstan's social and economic development.

In the evening on 5 December in Almaty, the country's largest city and former capital, the key volunteer organizations in the city held a party, with entertainment provided by volunteers from different organisations and dancing and music to follow. At this celebration, certificates were presented in recognition of volunteers' service during the year. The same evening, Volunteer House, which coordinates a network of volunteer organizations around the country, in collaboration with UNV held a special dinner for business people to thank them for their support during the year and encourage them to continue and expand their support in the year to come.
