Kazakhstan focuses on local volunteering to mark IVD

Almaty, Kazakhstan: The focus of the IVD for 2007 in Kazakhstan will be the contribution of the local volunteers to the country development: "Local volunteers – our heroes!". At the same time, to quote former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, "Volunteerism is the ultimate expression of what the United Nations is all about", the celebration of IVD will also a moment of contact between the UN and the people of Kazakhstan.

UNV, in cooperation with other volunteering involving organizations (e.g., Peace Corps, the Korean International Cooperation Agency, the Kazakhstan-Japan Centre for Human Development and the British Council) invited local organizations to celebrate IVD with their volunteers and to send their pictures and reports.

For Almaty-based organizations, UNV Kazakhstan and the UN Department of Public Information, in cooperation with the akimat of the City of Almaty are planning an event in the UN Information and Outreach Centre: local organizations involving volunteers are invited to participate in an exhibition and to a concert-presentation in which they will show the volunteer component of their activities. Moreover, the results of the competition among journalists on the theme "Volunteering in Kazakhstan: yesterday, today and tomorrow" will be announced and the winners awarded. Also the contest is organized by UNV, UN DPI and the akimat of the city of Almaty, in cooperation with Almaty Confederation of NGO and the Academy of Journalism of Kazakhstan.
