For this year's International Volunteer Day (IVD) in Liberia, the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme Support Unit, in close cooperation with the UNDP/UNV Country Office Team (COT) coordinated volunteer based events in three different locations in the sectors including Harper as well as the capital city Monrovia.
To promote volunteerism in Liberia it put together a photo exhibition on the work of UNV volunteers who have served in the mission area of Liberia since 2003. Additionally, it mobilized young volunteers to take the lead role in promoting volunteerism in Liberia via a 'Miss Volunteer' competition.
The winner was 20-year-old Hawa Veronica Sherif, a student at United Methodist University majoring in Management with International Religions. She is also the Vice Chair of Youth Alert, Inc.
“We can contribute to the peace and development of our country through volunteerism," she said. "The willingness and ability of every citizen to give freely of their time… every citizen can bring a change through volunteerism by engaging in peace-building initiatives, wide awareness campaigns on malaria, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS and sexually-transmitted diseases, speaking out against rape and gender-based violence and helping people throughout the communities to understand the meaning of the Millennium Development Goals, Poverty Reduction Strategy and major Government policies...”
