Liechtenstein introduces Volunteer Service Certificate

Vaduz, Liechtenstein: In order to improve the recognition and support of volunteer work, the Government of the Principality of Liechtenstein has introduced a Volunteer Service Certificate. Prime Minister Otmar Hasler and Ministers Alois Ospelt and Hansjörg Frick presented the new certificate on 2 December 2003.

Volunteer workers will now be able to record their services in the Volunteer Service Certificate. The certificate will serve as a personal reference and can be helpful when applying for professional positions. Years of volunteer work help develop experience and skills, including social competence, that are also useful and sought after in paid work.

The 52nd General Assembly of the United Nations proclaimed 2001 as the International Year of Volunteers. Through this proclamation, the UN underscored that volunteers worldwide make important contributions to securing social services and improving the economic and social well-being of the population. The objectives of this UN year were to recognize the services of volunteers, to create a network of organizations employing volunteers, to promote volunteer work, and to mobilize new volunteers.

The Government of the Principality of Liechtenstein subscribes to these objectives of the United Nations. Volunteer work in Liechtenstein has a long tradition. Many services are rendered that should be recognized, appreciated, and promoted. Volunteers are active in all areas and demographics. 

In celebration of the Day of Volunteers, Minister Alois Ospelt noted on 10 November 2001 that the UN Year of Volunteers represented an impulse for Liechtenstein to develop new opportunities for improving the recognition and support of volunteer work. He indicated that a Volunteer Service Certificate would be created as one of these opportunities.
