Mexico City: Over 600 parliamentarians from 122 member countries of the
Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) have in a resolution requested parliaments to foster or support national measures geared towards promoting international reconciliation and, among other things, the concept of culture, peace and volunteerism.
The resolution was adopted at the plenary session of IPU’s 110th Assembly in Mexico City, held from 15 to 23 April, 2004. The assembly reviewed, among other topics, promotion of international reconciliation, helping to bring stability to regions of conflict, and assisting with post-conflict reconstruction.
The United Nations Volunteers programme is working with the IPU Secretariat and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent on the preparation of a Guidance Note on Volunteerism and Legislation to be launched at the 111th IPU Assembly in Geneva in September 2004.
