VOLUNTADES 2002 celebrate IVD in Mexico
05 December 2002

Mexico City: More than 1,200 volunteers gathered in the La Salle University, Mexico City, to celebrate International Volunteer Day (IVD) in a programme led by Voluntades 2002.

Voluntades 2002 is an initiative of a group of volunteers and volunteer organizations aimed at recognizing volunteeres and voluntary work in the country. Among the highlights of IVD were speeches made by Voluntades heads, recognizing students for their artwork promoting volunteerism and a video presentation showing several local volunteers encouraging the youth to volunteer.

"The celebration was carried out by 100 per cent volunteer work," says Alejandro Arbide, President of Manos a la Obra, an organization promoting volunteerism in Mexico and Latin America. A volunteer clown spoke about his experience in bringing laughter; APAC, an organization that aids people with cerebral paralysis, played music throughout the event and a tourism school cooked and donated the food.
