Namibian volunteer-based organizations celebrate IVD

Windhoek: The Namibia Volunteer-based Organisations Forum (NVOF), comprising national and international volunteer based organisations in Namibia, jointly celebrated International Volunteer Day (IVD) 5 December 2003 in the capital Windhoek with large public attendance. The event for this year’s celebration was an “Out-door Campaign on Promotion of Volunteerism”, with some cultural display by local artists from all over the country. Around 25 national and international volunteer-involving organizations participated in the celebration. Also present were the representatives from diplomatic bodies, private sector companies, non-government organizations and United Nation agencies in Namibia.

With the theme, “Promoting Responsibility for National Development in Namibia Through Volunteerism”, this year’s IVD aims to support the national government’s efforts to improve people’s lives and and the role of volunteers in assisting the country achieve its national development objectives. This collaboration is also considered as a driving force for achieving the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in the country.

Activities at the celebration included speeches from the United Nations Secretary General, UNDP Administrator, and UNV Executive Coordinator, a.i. by Dr. Jacqui Badcock (UNDP Resident Representative, Namibia).

The Director General of the National Planning Commission, Honourable Immanuel Ngatjizeko delivered a speech on behalf of the Government of Namibia. His speech recounted the significance of volunteers as development partners in national and global development process.

Ms. Nicolette Bessinger of Namibia Red Cross Society read a speech on behalf of the Namibia Volunteer-based Organisation Forum (NVOF). In her speech, volunteer-based organizations asked for the support of Government and other stakeholders in recognizing, facilitating, promoting and networking of volunteer- organizations in Namibia.

Invited guests at the occasion included the Ministers, Heads of Diplomatic Missions in Namibia, Heads of UN agencies in Namibia, representatives of regional governments and the private sector as well as the general public.
