Kosovo's International Volunteer Day 2003
28 November 2003
On 5 December 2003 United Nations Volunteers Kosovo will celebrate International Volunteer Day. The day was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly to draw global attention to the work of volunteers and is celebrated all over the world by all different kinds of voluntary organizations. This year UN Volunteers Kosovo and different NGOs will come together to highlight volunteers’ activities in Kosovo and their contribution to the mission and Kosovo in general.
In coordination with the NGOs’ Balkan Sunflowers and Mother Theresa Society, UN Volunteers have organized a renovation day in the IDP Roma Camp in Plementina, a village near Pristina. A group of 30 Volunteers from UNV and Balkan Sunflowers as well as local scouts and young residents of the camp will come together to do a clean up and to paint the interior of the accommodation of ten families. The activities will last the whole day.
Together with the NGOs Vietnam Veterans of America and HANDIKOS, UN Volunteers Kosovo has organized a friendly 'wheelchair basketball" tournament. At 10.30 in the morning an UNMIK Team and the Wheelchair Basketball Team Pristina will meet in the University Sports Hall ‘1 Tetori’ in Pristina. The aim is to raise the awareness towards disabled people whose problems and needs up to now are not receiving adequate attention in Kosovo. Spectators for the match are most welcome and admission is free.
The formal celebration of International Volunteers Day 2003 will start at 18.00 in the Red Hall at Pristina Youth Center. Kosovo’s Minister of Culture, Youth, Sports and Nonresidential Affairs, Mr. Bexhet Brajshori and the Deputy Representative for the Interim Civil Administration, Mr. Francesco Bastagli along with Mr. Robert Piper, Resident Representative, UNDP will emphasize volunteers’ contribution in the mission and Kosovo in their speeches. For entertainment, the Global Motion Social Dance Theatre Project, made up of Kosovar Youth and along with some UNVs, will perform a short play in three languages with a theme on volunteerism and the environment.
