United Nations Volunteers in Kosovo and the Kosovo Youth Network marked this year’s International Volunteer Day by focusing on young people, environmental protection and urging local communities to volunteer.
On 2 December, volunteers were invited to participate in different activities and discussions. Games such as table tennis, darts, scout games and songs, discussions on volunteerism were held. These were organized by UNV, the Kosovo Youth Volunteers and Youth Center in Ljipljan.
UNV also had a presentation on the work of volunteers in Kosovo and the significance of volunteerism in development. Four UN Volunteers shared their volunteering experiences in different countries. In addition, the Balkan Sun Flower Volunteers presented their work and how they contributed to local communities.
KYN, the non-governmental organizations YC Hareja and YAK and UN Volunteers Kosovo organized a drawing workshop for mentally-handicapped children on 3 December.The primary school in Vushtrri supports 16 students. Volunteers from various international and local organizations spent the day playing with the children. The children’s drawings were exhibited at the official celebration of IVD on 5 December at the Oda Theatre.
In connection with a waste management project implemented by the organization ECOPARTNER, volunteers from Kosovo Youth Volunteers, the Balkan Sunflowers and UNV organized cleaning of public places in the villages of Rudnik/Runik, Banja/Baje and Suvo Grlo/Suhorgelle on 4 December.
Prior to the cleaning, training on environmental issues was held in Rudnik/Runik. The aim was to show to local people that volunteers can provide support but it is up to the community to sustain the project.
UN Volunteers also played chess and domino matches with members of the Blind Society in Pristina.
On 5 December an official ceremony was held in Oda Theatre in Pristina. Two short movies on volunteerism were presented and message opening of painting and photo exhibit by Mr. Lucien Cjaker of UNMIK.
