Sierra Leone - IVD events

Volunteers around the world will join together on 5 December to celebrate International Volunteer Day. Concurrently, volunteers, both national and international, across Sierra Leone will celebrate the date in the capital, Freetown.

The move for a full national celebration can be credited to a network called ‘Volunteering Involving Organisations’ (VIO) Forum which has been recently established by active volunteer organizations in Sierra Leone. The VIO Forum is a coalition of like-minded organizations which all believe that volunteerism, if harnessed properly, can be a force for development in the country. The forum has been created to act as a coordinating body for all volunteer organisations, to mainstream volunteerism and to lobby for a national volunteering framework.

The VIO network will be at the forefront of plans pertaining to this year’s International Volunteer Day. In the week leading up to 5 December, volunteers in Freetown will engage in a host of activities including radio discussions and the Volunteer Football Match.

On IVD itself volunteers come together to commemorate the occasion at Atlantic Hall, National Stadium at 10.00 a.m. The commemoration ceremony will include a debate competition on the theme 'Volunteerism for National Development' between Njala and Fourah Bay College students and moderated by a professional and performances by popular artists including Artists United 4 Children and Youth Development (AUCAYD).

On Saturday 6 December at 4.00pm there will be a volunteer football match between National and International volunteering involving organizations and a sensitization session on HIV and AIDS by Right to Play volunteers at Parade Grounds, Circular Road Freetown.
The theme for this year’s International Volunteer Day is 'Volunteer for national Development': in Krio “Wok fri fo mek Salone Bete”. Through this theme, IVD aims to highlight the positive impact of volunteerism on development in Sierra Leone, and encourage more people to volunteer.

The media are invited and encouraged to attend all celebrations of IVD
