Sri Lanka - IVD events

‘Expressions-the Rhythm of Life’, an event to commemorate International Volunteer Day, is being organized by UNV and UNDP together with international volunteer agencies in Sri Lanka.

The programme, scheduled for December 10, will celebrate the idea of volunteerism by focusing on volunteers and their contribution and efforts to make this world a better place. It will also include expressions on realities of the present world; and will bring together local volunteer networks, Government agencies, UN agencies, I/NGOs, civil society organizations and the business community to raise awareness of the concept of volunteerism and stimulate thinking on collective ways of overcoming challenges for increased voluntary action and engagement in development and peacebuilding.

The two-hour event will include a performance by ‘Theatre Y’, an Indian theatre group, performing in Sri Lanka for the first time. There will be excerpts from their critically acclaimed play ‘Reality’, a presentation by acclaimed Sri Lankan percussionist and choreographer, Ravibandu Vidhyapathy, and dance performances by members of the Buddhawatta Dancing Academy.

As UNV headquarters will be supporting and celebrating the launch of the new Online Volunteering website (http://www.onlinevolunteering.org) to coincide with IVD this year, online volunteering will be promoted in Sri Lanka too this December as part of IVD celebrations.

Press conference 3 December at 9am, UN conference room, Colombo 07.

The event is sponsored by Taj Hotels and Resorts, EFM , ETV, Volunteer Services Overseas (VSO), and Volunteer Information and Coordination Centre (VOICE).
