Volunteer at orphanage in Tanzania
04 May 2006, 20:14
by Scott Fifer

The TunaHAKI Shelter for Street Kids in Moshi, Kilimanjaro region in Tanzannia accepts volunteers to assist at the Shelter.  Activities can include teaching English to the children, arts and crafts, acrobatics, music lessons, assisting in fundraising and publicity, and other valuable activities, depending on your skills. Currently there are 19 children at the shelter, ranging in age from 6-16.  There is no charge for volunteers, though you would have to provide your own transportation to Moshi.

If you wish to stay at the shelter, it could be arranged for you to sleep there, though you may be more comfortable at the nearby YMCA (approximately $12 a night).  If you would like to eat your meals at the Shelter, a small donation to pay for your food is required.  Dates and duration of stay are flexible.  References required.  This is an excellent opportunity to immerse yourself in the culture of Tanzania, and to give back to the world. To meet these children is to fall in love with them.

For more information, please visit www.tunahaki.org or contact fifer@tunahaki.org.

Feel very pleased to see the children of Tanahaki, and wanted to give volunteer service if I were selected by UNV service in the future.

Let them develop for their life.

I am very moved by your mission and activities. To help you along, I would simply suggest that you put more emphasis on helping the children realize their dreams within the Tanzanian or African context, for that is where their destiny lies. That these children don't remember or celebrate their birthdays is not a sad story; it is simply part of African culture. It is only now, under Western cultural pressure, that you find some Africans celebrating birthdays. Every nation and culture has its own dream and the Tanzanian dream, for example, may be very different from the American dream. What is important to Americans may not be important to Africans. I have noted, on your website, that you let the children talk about themselves and their dreams, and that is precisely what I am urging you to focus on. Again, thank you for the great work you are doing.

What a great pleasure in helping our beloved African brothers and sisters, especially the young ones who need now our experience in education. If seleted by UNV, I would be so glad to not only teach, but bring those children up in the way they should grow and when they are matured, they will not depart from what they achieve and certainly they would become "The Future", for the future is them.

Helping and working with children in Africa has been my dream since I was a little girl.I'd be happy to teach children there if some foundations sponsor my transportation and stay there.

It has been my wish ever since to help children living in a hard way life especially orphans in opharnage homes.

I feel guilty by not doing the same. I am available at any time. I wish I could get someone to facilitate me with any techinical asssistance so as to be capable of providing care for these children. It's real my concern.

It is good to help these children as I wish to do so, but I have no money to live and work there. If I get a sponsor I shall be pleased to be there.

I am available any time.

So if i get help from sombody or the UNV to sponsor me. i will be happy to help my brothers and sisters worldwide with all my heart and strength. Once more i say thanks to the UN.
