Cleaning drive to launch IVD event in Timor Leste capital
02 December 2005

Dili City, Timor Leste: A series of activities are being undertaken in Dili City, capital of Timor Leste, to celebrate the International Volunteer Day (IVD) on 5 December.

Local and international volunteers will take part in a cleaning programme on that day, cleaning around the Government Palace and Peace Park area of Dili City. The cleaning drive, which will include participants carrying banners, aims to increase awareness among the city’s population about environmental preservation and promote volunteerism.

About 150 volunteers from Timor Leste Red Cross, United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme and civil society organizations will participate in the cleaning drive. The local administration of Dili district will provide support to the volunteers with a garbage lorry for carrying the waste and dumping it in the specified waste dumps.

A radio interview of a local volunteer will be broadcast at 6:30 pm of 5 December on the frequency 100.5FM. Radio Lorico Lian will organize the interview of Soekarno Fernandes, who has vast volunteering experience in Timor Leste.

All UNVs working in Timor Leste will gather at Obrigado Barak in the evening to meet and share their experiences. This is expected to inspire others and strengthen their commitment to voluntary work.

In Oecusse district, local government officials, volunteers from NGOs, UNVs and local youths will participate in a rally of volunteers and a roundtable discussion on IVD.

An article will be published in at least two national daily newspapers, highlighting the IVD messages from the UN Secretary General, Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), UNV Executive Coordinator and Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in Timor Leste.
