Independent Timor-Leste celebrates IVD for the first time
27 November 2003

For the first time ever, an independent Timor-Leste will celebrate International Volunteer Day. UNV has been working closely with other partner volunteer organizations in Timor-Leste to launch a series of events that will promote volunteerism throughout the year.

In cooperation with "Arte Moris", an art school located in the old Australian Military Hospital and voluntarily managed by two Swiss artists, there will be a small exhibition depicting the work of volunteer organizations in Timor - Leste. A highlight of the exhibition will include the unveiling of a Mural created by local artists portraying how the Timorese society conceives volunteerism through art. The Mural will later be donated to "Xanana’s Reading Room" where it will be displayed permanently.

Further awareness raising activities will include the placement of information about IVD in local newspapers and a series of radio programs around the country dedicated to spreading awareness of the work of volunteers.

Celebrations will continue into the night with dancing and dinner at the long awaited "UNV Night" to be held in the Staff Recreation Center in Obrigado. Proceeds from the event will be donated to local charities.
