Raising awareness in Timor-Leste
22 January 2009
Journalists from several local media groups were invited to go around Dili and interview volunteers at their working locations. Journalists from four newspapers and a local radio came for the interviews. They interviewed Dr. Gadel Kareen, International volunteer with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), four volunteers of the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme from Movement Control (MOVCON), and youth from the MAC (Movimento de Adolescentes & Criancas Unidas) Youth Group. As a result, two articles were published on the local newspapers on IVD, and a Radio program discussed volunteerism.
The IVD Celebration in Timor-Leste was held at the United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste (UNMIT) Compound, Obrigado Barracks, in Dili. Several UNV volunteers from the Mission and UN Agencies attended the event. The event also had the participation of local volunteers from the MAC Youth Group. The meeting also had the presence of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Mr. Atul Khare, who had a very nice message for all the UNV volunteers and also delivered the Secretary General’s message. The Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Mr. Finn Reske Nielsen, also participated with a very inspiring message to all volunteers.
The new UNV movie, Inspiration in Action, was played, raising a lot of emotions and praise from the attendees. During the ceremony, UNV launched the Dengue and Malaria campaign in Timor-Leste, which is being done in collaboration with the Ministry of Health. The preparations for the campaign started before IVD, with the first training for the Dengue Malaria Campaign taking place on December 2nd.
The training was conducted at the Obrigado Barracks by Mr. Rick Jacobsen from the Ministry of Health. Fourteen people were instructed to become trainers on Dengue and Malaria prevention. Among the attendees were national UNMIT staff, national UNV volunteers from the agencies, international volunteers and youth from the MAC Youth Group. Some of the attendees were from the districts.
The objective of this campaign is to bring awareness to the local communities on how to identify the symptoms of the diseases, how to look for treatment and how to prevent mosquito infestations. The campaign should last until the end of the rainy season, which started in November. On Saturday December 6th, one of the trainers already held her first presentation to the community in front of 50 people.
The meeting closed with a presentation by the MAC Youth group who sang two Timorese songs, one in Portuguese and the other in Tetun.
