Uganda combats malaria and enhances the environment on IVD
02 December 2003

Kampala: The UN Volunteers programme in Uganda, in partnership with the Kampala City Council will highlight two of the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDG) as part of Uganda’s International Volunteer Day celebrations.

Uganda’s UN Resident Representative, Mr. Daouda Toure, has coordinated with Kampala Mayor, John Ssebaana Kizito, to address the serious problem of mosquito breeding grounds in the Mulago National Hospital vicinity. This action supports MDG number six, which aims to combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases, and MDG number seven, which aims to ensure environmental sustainability.

The inspection tour of Kampala City Council Chief Health Inspector and UNV Programme Officer, Paul Matogo revealed that the swamp and marshy area between the hospital and the Wandegeya slums were the main breeding places for mosquitoes. The mosquitoes, known to pass blood-borne illnesses from one victim to another, have inconveniently affected the patients and staff of the Mulago National Hospital.

On IVD, the UN Volunteers will organize a series of activities to eliminate the mosquito breeding sites. They will conduct construction and rehabilitation works including filling up the brick-making pits which contain stagnant water; draining the stagnant water from the swamp and marshy areas to the larger permanent drainage channel; protecting the spring which is the main domestic water source of Wandegeya residents; planting trees around the vicinity; and cleaning up the mounds of garbage dumped along the drainage channel.

The UN Volunteers will also team-up with the youth working at the vehicle-washing bay to clear the bushes in the swamp and marshy areas and to re-direct the washing bay’s run-off water to the drainage channel instead of the swamp. As well, they will provide toilet facilities for the youth working in the vehicle-washing bay and the nursery school nearby the hospital.
