Volunteering: Benefits regulation requires overhaul by Young People Now - UK
A new youth volunteering framework cannot work without an overhaul of the benefits system, Ian Russell will tell Home Secretary David Blunkett and Chancellor Gordon Brown. Russell, who heads a Government commission on youth volunteering, will urge them to relax benefit regulations that can inhibit young people from becoming volunteers.  Read article

Consultation drive launched on youth volunteer plan in the UK 
Young people are to be given a say in a nationwide plan to get more 16 to 25-year-olds to volunteer, it was announced today. The commission on youth volunteering, announced by the chancellor, Gordon Brown, in his last budget, has been charged with drawing up the national framework, although the chancellor has previously advocated a scheme where young people would be paid a living allowance to spend a "gap year" working in the community. Ministers have cited the US Americorps programme as a model.  Read article
