Painting a positive picture 
Young volunteers from the Queen Margaret Academy in Ayr are taking part in a community art project to improve their school garden by creating a colourful outdoor classroom. Six schools have been involved in The Duke of Edinburgh's Award Curriculum for Excellence pilot project during the past academic year, with groups of over 280 young people positively contributing to improve their schools and wider community through projects in child care, sports coaching, community arts and conservation projects.  Visit site
Image problem turns recruits away 
Despite heavy investment from the government and the sector, charities are still struggling to recruit volunteers. An independent inquiry into young adult volunteering in the UK, published in June, advised that greater recognition of volunteering as a legitimate job-seeking activity is needed, along with better support from the business community.   Visit site

Supporting Kids in Peru (SKIP) 
SKIP is a UK non-profit organization helping disadvantaged children to realise their right to an education. It is currently working on the north coast of Peru, in the impoverished districts that surround the city of Trujillo. Its primary work area, El Porvenir, has a great deal of social problems that need urgent support. The team is comprised of volunteers from overseas, as well as from the community of El Porvenir and local universities in Trujillo. SKIP is always looking for enthusiastic, dedicated volunteers who can contribute something positive to the project and help achieve more.   Visit site
Volunteer makes his mark in Peru 
Teenager Mark Pope has just returned from a spell volunteering in Peru. The 19-year-old joined Platform 2 which aims to raise awareness of global development amongst young British adults who would not normally be able to afford the opportunity to volunteer overseas.  Visit site
IT4Communities (UK) 
A charity supporting IT volunteering in the UK, funded by the charitable arm of the Information Technologists' Company and by corporate sponsorship. Supports a large network of IT professional volunteers throughout the UK and, occasionally, overseas. Since inception in 2002 its volunteers have delivered over £2.5 million worth of support to charities and voluntary sector organizations in the UK.  Visit site
