New UK charity to revolutionize youth volunteering
08 May 2006
by Ben Pindar

London, UK: A major new charity dedicated to revolutionizing youth volunteering was launched today at a glitzy ceremony in London's Leicester Square, in the UK.

The good cause, which is called "V", has been created to inspire and engage one million new young volunteers ages 16 to 25 and is being officially launched by UK Chancellor Gordon Brown.

"V" was established following a recommendation from the Russell Commission which was set up by the then Home Secretary, David Blunkett, and the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown, to develop a new national framework for youth action and engagement.

The Russell Commission is part of the Government's commitment to increase youth volunteering and civic service and today marks the transition of the project from Government to an independent charity.

Working to ensure V is a success is an energetic group of 16 to 25-year-olds, called V20, who act as consultants and are involved in delivering the charity's messages and work.

Young people form the largest constituency among the charity's board of trustees and they participate in all decisions to help ensure the views of young people are at the heart of the charity's work.

The new charity has the task of identifying and securing private sector support, both financial and in-kind. The Government has made £50m available to match-funding raised from the private sector.

The new chief executive of V, Terry Ryall, said: "V aims to set new standards in the quantity, quality and diversity of volunteering for young people.

"We want to make volunteering a 'normal' part of young people's lives, providing them with tangible assets for their future as well as for society at large.

"V is the first independent charity to be established in this way being predominantly youth-led and born out of consultation with over 700 stakeholders and 6,000 young people from all over the country."

Charity staff will work in partnership with the public and private sector and with voluntary and community sector organizations to develop and share best practice in youth volunteering and to increase youth volunteering opportunities overall.

I would like to encourage youth volunteers from developed nations to come and volunteer in third world countries like Zimbabwe. I am willing to coordinate such exchange programs and to host those that are willing to come to Zimbabwe and work with the organisation that i am currently volunteering for.

Thank you

Where would I go to find out more about volunteering in other countries?! I have looked into it before but have always been told my age isn't right. I would rally love to do something like this & i would love some more information as I have wanted to do soemthing like this for a while now.

Thank you, & I'm really in agreement with more people my age volunteering to help.

Gordon Brown's move sounds great! The thing is, I am right now on the web trying to organise a one-off volunteer day for my church's youth group (aged 12-17) and my web searches are not proving to be very fruitful. There are many youth who do want to make a difference... I'm surprised that more agencies aren't tapping into the brilliant resource that today's youth are!

Dear Volunteers thanks for comming with V20, I only challenge you to reach other countries so that the friendship and skills are shared with african and other continents. Many children and youth would smile if you visit and stay with them for aday or aweek. Am working with Taso( The AIDS Support Organisation) and CBO called SOUNDS OF HOPE CHILDREN AND YOUTH CENTRE.

Stay blessed,

Sarah

Communities in Africa really need volunteers to come and share with the youth and children new skills and different cultures. This really changes their lives and situations. I encourage volunteers to come and volunteers in rural areas here in Kenya, I am currently working with tumaini miles of smiles centre, Western Kenya.

Hi, am from Kenya and a leader of a youth group in kibera slums. I would like to urge groups from developed countries to come and volunteer in activities related to theatre and sports. It will help many youths realize their potential and nurture their talents.

we are always willing to arrange for such events.

best regards,

Irene.
