Welsh volunteers get their annual chance to shine
04 December 2008
Cardiff, Wales, UK: With International Volunteers’ Day on the horizon (Friday, 5 December), Wales Council for Voluntary Action (WCVA) is calling for nominations for its annual award scheme which rewards and recognizes the people who keep the wheels of Wales’s vibrant third sector turning.
The adults and young people who are usually backstage helping others are set to be given their chance to shine through the 2009 Wales Volunteer of the Year Award.
Supported by Peninsula Business Services, WCVA’s Wales Volunteer of the Year Award is presented in five categories - individuals, young people (under 25 years), ‘green’ volunteers, trustees and groups.
There will be up to three winners in each category, with 15 national winners presented with their awards at a ceremony in Cardiff next June, and all nominees awarded commendation certificates at a local ceremony or by post.
The 2008 winners included a teenage ‘buddy’ who inspires vulnerable young people, a team of volunteer drivers helping older people enjoy a new lease of life, a group of women who have raised more than half a million pounds to fight breast cancer and an advocate for the rights of Bridgend council house tenants.
‘The quality of the 200-plus nominations for the 2008 awards proved just how strong the third sector and volunteering ethos is in Wales,’ said Graham Benfield OBE, WCVA Chief Executive.
Darren Chadwick, Peninsula’s Business Manager added: ‘Peninsula Business Services is delighted to be involved with the 2009 Awards. We’ve been working with WCVA for over three years and in that time have realised the breadth and depth of the volunteer and community sector operating throughout Wales. Indeed, as our client base has developed, we’ve been able to get to know some groups really well and have become much more aware of the issues they face.
‘We are looking forward to meeting more members of the sector as we progress to the awards presentation in June and celebrating their outstanding achievements.’
Details of the scheme, including nomination forms, are available from the WCVA Helpdesk on 0800 2888 329, or e-mail email@example.com. They can also be downloaded from the website www.wcva.org.uk/voty. The deadline for receipt of nominations is 3 April 2009.
