Barbados to raise funds for non-profit organizations
23 November 2004
St. Michael's, Barbados: The Barbados Association of Non-Governmental Organisations (BANGO) is organizing several activities to mark International Volunteer Day, from 5-11 December, in St. Michael’s, Barbados.
The week-long celebration will start with a Church Service at the St. Michael’s Cathedral, the Volunteer Awards Ceremony in the afternoon, followed by the launching of “Tag Day”, a fundraising campaign to assist civil society organizations.
Money collected from selling the tags will used be used to fund civil society organisations, e.g., equipping a secretariat with office supplies.
“Barbadians can be called perpetual volunteers, especially when we look back at our culture. People help one another without looking for payment.
The neighbour who would cook everyday religiously for the old lady who is disabled by old age and left for all intents and purposes abandoned by her family; the child who would get care and attention from a stranger; the person who would go out of their way to buy something for a neighbour," says Roosevelt 0. King, Secretary General of BANGO.
The organization encourages Barbadians to donate to their cause and to participate during the celebrations.
