Tirana, Albania: UNV Albania, along with numerous other volunteer-involving partner organisations (PVN, REC, Mjaft, Peace Corps and Terre des Hommes), organised a series of events to mark this year's IVD.
To kick-off IVD activities, on Monday 3 December, a local volunteer-involving organisation, PVN, organised a performance by disabled children at the Children's Theatre of Tirana. This was a great success: they performed to a full house.
The main activity has been the voluntary donation of books to be distributed to young people and children who do not have access to such literature. Today, we shall donate some of the books that have been collected in Tirana to two under-resourced schools in the capital.
On Friday, 7 December, UNV shall donate more of the books collected in Tirana to the public library in the north-eastern Albanian town of Kukes. At the same time, volunteers are collecting and distributing books in other regions of Albania: Durres, Kucove, Berat and Divjaka, so the initiative has taken off across the country!
This evening, UNV shall be joining the other volunteer-involving organisations for an outdoor expo at the Tirana Pyramid. To catch the attention of passer-bys and promote the benefits of volunteerism, we shall be projecting images onto an outdoor screen and be available to talk to interested people.
And, as a final event, on Wednesday 19 December, we shall organise a one-day workshop for volunteer-involving organisations working with youth and Roma. The workshop will allow UNV to consult with the local organisations in order to plan for future joint activities, facilitate cooperation between these organisations and give us the opprtunity to promote volunteerism and active citizenship.
