Voluntary environmental action exceeds 1.5 million hours  

Bonn, Germany: Thousands of volunteers around the world have registered more than 1.5 million hours of effort to tackle climate change and other environmental issues, as part of a campaign to promote International Volunteer Day on 5 December.

The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme launched the global campaign 'Volunteering for our Planet' to promote voluntary effort for the environment.  Read article

Public service on the cusp of becoming a national movement 
Many non-profit organisations are seeing an increase in people looking to help. Non-profit organisations now have 9.4m employees and 4.7m full-time volunteers nationwide. Corporate America, too, is joining in. The Government plans to create a National Volunteer Service Corps that will provide assistance to poor Filipinos struggling from the impact of the global financial crisis.
