China marks IVD with a forum on Olympic volunteering
30 November 2007

Beijing, China:

From 5 to 13 December, the Beijing Youth Federation (BYF), together with UNV China, is hosting an "International Volunteering Communication Week". The first part of the event will be part of the International Volunteer Day celebration in the country.

A representative from UNV Headquarters, Mae Chao, has been invited to

participate in opening ceremony and also to present a lecture on volunteerism on the same day. UNV China Programme Officer John Floretta will read a message of support for Olympic volunteers,

from the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon, and the IVD message of UNV Executive

Coordinator Ad de Raad.

The forum sessions are divided into sets of 3 days with the topics of "Voluntary Services Management", "Development of Voluntary Services Industry", and "Sports Events Voluntary Services".

The original concept of the forum was expanded from a focus on Olympics volunteering to building capacity for volunteerism in general, beyond volunteering for the Olympics.

UNV China country office and its headquarters  in Bonn have been assisting in the recruitment of international experts to participate in the forum and collaborate in programming the volunteering part of  large-scale sport events.
