Sport Volunteering Seminar – “Making the Right Connections”
Reading, UK
ILAM and NASD have brought together their ideas and experiences to make this event one with a great deal of relevance for those working with sport and volunteers, demonstrating the power of partnership working.
Engaging with volunteers is at the heart of effective and sustainable communities. Around 20% of those who volunteer, do so in a sporting context. With young people, that figure rises to over 40%, and yet sport and leisure providers are not on the radar of development professionals working in the volunteering infrastructure organisations, and vice versa. If we are to increase participation in sport and physical activity we need to increase the number and quality of volunteers in sport, support existing sports clubs and also ensure that sport can work in a range of community settings.

With the work of the Russell Commission and Youth Matters putting sport in a wider social context, and recent changes to the volunteering infrastructure landscape, it has never been more important for anyone in sport and leisure who links professionally to the voluntary workforce to be aware of the opportunities represented by bodies such as Volunteering England and the National Association for Voluntary and Community Action and by initiatives such as the Commission on the Future of Volunteering. For professionals working in volunteering, the impact of the PE and School Sports Club Link Strategy, the UK Action Plan for Coaching and 2012 Olympics and Paralympics will bring sport to the forefront of their working consciousness.

The making the right connections seminar will bring together the two worlds. Examining volunteering in sport from national policy to local good practice and with speakers from volunteering, the voluntary sector, leisure and sport.
