Youth volunteering, social integration and decent work: Inspiring leadership
03 June 2011

As we mark the International Year of Youth: Dialogue and Mutual Understanding (August 2010 to August 2011) as well as the tenth anniversary of the International Year of Volunteers (2011), the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme is pleased to release this discussion paper which was commissioned for the 48th session of the Commission for Social Development in February 2010 on “Youth Volunteering, Social Integration, and Decent Work: Inspiring Leadership.”

This discussion paper addresses the inter-relationship among social integration, decent work, poverty alleviation, and volunteerism, especially with regards to young people.  It focuses on the experiences of 13 organisations from around the world engaging youth volunteers to address issues of poverty, identity, access to work, HIV and AIDS and achieving the MDGs.  It provides examples of how volunteerism can strengthen both the social and economic integration of young people.
