Details of Kyrgyz celebration

by Hugh Salmon

Dear All,

FYI – Summary of IVD Plans for Kyrgyzstan. Please also find attached publicity materials we have created / adapted: one banner for the entrance of the V-EXPO. We also adapted the IVD poster, in Russian (with headline in Russian, Kyrgyz and English), but it was too large for this email – if you would like it, I will try to send in a different format. Local events will also create their own version of this poster using different details at the bottom.

Celebrating IVD in Kyrgyzstan

On 5th December, in the capital Bishkek, a V-EXPO will be held at the Fine Arts Museum.

This event will be a unique opportunity for local, national and international volunteer involving organizations (VIOs) to exhibit their work to the public, and recruit new volunteers.

Each participating VIO will have an information stand, displaying examples of their current volunteer activities, including photos and volunteer stories. They will also give information on activities or projects for which they need to recruit volunteers. A big screen in the exhibition hall will show photos and films of volunteers in action, and every hour will give a running total of the number of new volunteers recruited during IVD by the participating VIOs. At the end of the day, the final total of new volunteers recruited during IVD events in Bishkek and the provinces will be announced to the press and public.

The V-EXPO in Bishkek will open with a formal presentation at 10.00 and close with an informal concert at 16.00, including plays, poems and songs on the theme of volunteering, with participation of all VIOs present. To help publicise the V-EXPO, there will be a press conference on 2nd December, and an IVD slot on a national TV Breakfast Show ‘Zamana’ on 5th December.

In eight other towns and cities in Kyrgyzstan simultaneous events to mark International Volunteer Day will take place. In most cities there will be a V-EXPO similar to the one in Bishkek. There will be a wide range of other activities connected with IVD around the country, including in Osh the cleaning of a famous tourist landmark by volunteers, in Naryn an anti-glue sniffing campaign in schools, in Jalal-Abad a mobile celebration of IVD / volunteer recruitment drive using four local buses and in Batken a TV show and Radio phone-in.

These events are initiated and funded by UNV, and supported by the Ministry of Education Department for Youth Policy, with active collaboration of the following VIOs: Peace Corps, JICA, Red Cross and Red Crescent, Habitat for Humanity, HelpAge International, Rotary Club. In addition a wide range of local VIOs, and university volunteer centres, will participate.
