Wales
plays part in worldwide celebrations
Techniquest,
Cardiff Bay: 6pm -- Wales
will be playing its part in worldwide festivities next week when the
United Nations celebrates the start of the International Year of Volunteers
2001.
As UN Secretary-General
Kofi Annan officially launches the year at UN Headquarters in New York,
Wales Council for Voluntary Action will be leading the Welsh contributions
with an event at Cardiff Bay.
Welsh Assembly Minister
for Health & Social Security Jane Hutt is one of the speakers at
the Techniquest launch, which will also be attended by other Assembly
Members, voluntary organizations and volunteers themselves.
There are 1.9 million
people in Wales engaged in some kind of volunteering or community action.
More than 70 countries have committed to marking the International Year
of Volunteers, making it the largest celebration of volunteering ever
conceived.
"It will be
a global opportunity to celebrate and recognise the outstanding contribution
made by volunteers world-wide," said Isobel Hume, WCVA Volunteering
Events Officer. "We want as many as possible to take up this unique
opportunity to highlight the diverse range of work performed by volunteers
across Wales.
"We are delighted
with the enthusiastic response we have already had to IYV2001 in Wales.
With a dynamic calendar of activities and events already planned for
the year, we're hoping that more people than ever will be encouraged
to become volunteers."
Among forthcoming
events WCVA has arranged is a volunteer organizers' training day, featuring
USA volunteer management experts Steve McCurley and Rick Lynch, on March
20, 2001. The annual Volunteers Week - Wales, from June 1-7, will see
volunteer bureaux, local community groups, hospitals, companies and
other organizations recognise, reward and recruit volunteers. And on
December 5, there will be a national grand finale to the year's activities.
