As part of activities
marking the celebration of the United Nations International Year of
Volunteers (IYV2001), and Global Youth Service Day (GYSD2001) Celebrations
in Liberia, the International Association for Volunteer Effort (IAVE)-Liberia
in collaboration with the National Aids Control Program (NACP) conducted
a one day HIV/AIDS awareness and volunteering workshop on Friday may
18,2001 at the United States Information Center, Mamba Point, Monrovia.
In her welcoming
remarks, the Public Affairs Officer at the United States Embassy in
Monrovia, Mrs. Sarah C. Morrison praised IAVE for undertaking such a
worthy program Under difficult circumstances and pledge her office continue
support to IAVE in her quest to reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS, STDs
and the promotion of volunteerism in Liberia. Students, heads of youth
organizations and community volunteers attended the workshop.
In related Development,
IAVE and Habitat for Humanity International- Liberia have agreed in
principle to sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to strengthen
their partnership and to promote volunteerism at all levels of the Liberian
society particularly, amongst the youths.
Main while, the
country Representative of IAVE-Liberia, Mr. Jacob D. Massaquoi, II is
advocating for the enactment of pro-volunteer policies. According to
Mr. Massaquoi, the establishment of pro-volunteer policies by the Liberian
Government will enhance volunteerism and thus promoting the United Nations
International Year of Volunteers (IYV2001) in Liberia
