IVD celebrated with UNV, Peace Corps in Belize
Belmopan, Belize: United Nations Volunteers (UNV) Programme participated in a Peace Corps sponsored workshop to highlight this event. The Peace Corps is known for living and working in developing countries on a voluntary basis, and first arrived in Belize in 1962. Their acts of selflessness have contributed to the development process in Belize. Since their arrival, more than 1.600 volunteers have served here.

Youth empowerment, strengthening democracy in Afghanistan
Kabul, Afghanistan:
The IVD 2007 celebrations in Afghanistan were focused on involving the Afghan Youth to volunteer. In cooperation with numerous UN agencies and Local Youth Councils, UNV programme (UNDP and UNAMA) organized the Local Youth Councils and Youth Parliament to come up with project proposals within the framework of the MDGs.

International Volunteer Day 2007 in Burkina Faso involves participation of volunteers from all corners of the country in Bobo-Dioulasso, Tenkodogo, Diébougou, Houndé, Boulsa, Dori and from the capital city Ouagadougou. Activities are initiated by UNV volunteers, national volunteers, youth associations and academic institutions.
Programmes include theatre, a football match between volunteers and journalists, blood donation for hospitals, food distribution to the needy, cleaning the environment, conferences and meetings about volunteer action and civic commitment. In Ouagadougou, IVD is marked by a public conference at the House of the People. Youth is strongly involved in IVD activities at Ouagadougou’s University and Data Processing and Management Institute (ISIG) where volunteers hold information stands to sensitize visitors on the spirit of volunteerism. Others share training in data processing at the capital’s Prison or go to hospitals and talk to patients, especially those living with HIV/AIDS. (In French)
