Philippines - IVD events - The 5th San Juanico Bridge Walkathon

The Runggiyan Social Development Foundation. Inc., a non-government social development organization of Eastern Visayas based in Tacloban City, will kick off the celebration of the National Volunteer Month with the conduct of Sumpay Sangkay 2008: The 5th San Juanico Bridge Walkathon on 7 December 2008.

The Sumpay Sangkay 2008 San Juanico Bridge Walkathon will also mark the UN's 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women with the theme 'Human Rights for Women, Human Rights For All'. The Runggiyan is inviting 1,000 people to volunteer and walk for the aforementioned cause.

The Sumpay Sangkay was started by the Runggiyan in 2004 to highlight its programmes and projects empowering women, youth and children through entrepreneurial development, capability building and educational assistance. Last year, it started institutionalizing its volunteer services with the launching of its Pintakasi Volunteer Program.
'Pintakasi' is an Eastern Visayan word meaning 'collective action for a common benefit'. The tagalog counterpart is 'bayanihan'. Local communities are able to implement projects by conducting 'pintakasi'. Runggiyan's Pintakasi Volunteer Programme includes the following: Volunteer Recruitment, Selection and Placement; Partnership Development; and Promotion of Volunteering.

The Runggiyan Social Development Foundation, Inc. was started by volunteers in 1985 and has been able to deliver its services through volunteers. It has a pool of professional and youth volunteers who provide from legal and paralegal and basic counselling assistance for women survivors of abuse; tutorials for Runggiyan scholars and Home Study Program learners; technical assistance for organizational/entrepreneurial development of people's organization and women's groups; to advocating for development causes and issues such as gender equality, women's rights, adolescent reproductive health, sustainable development, democratic participation in governance and promoting child-friendly societies.

Hence, Runggiyan's Volunteer Month celebration will rightfully end with its 23rd Founding Anniversary and the 22nd General Assembly on 30 December 2008. For further information about Runggiyan's work , please visit
