Sudan - Cleaning up Khartoum

To mark the day, the United Nations Volunteer (UNV) programme in Sudan organized a series of activities in Ombadda Locality in Omdurman in cooperation with the Sudanese Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and the Sudanese Council for Voluntary Agencies in partnership with Sudanese NGOs.
More than 70 medical doctors and 10 dentists provided free medical consultations to the community, while workshops were held to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS and Female Genital Mutilation. More than 50 UNV volunteers participated in the event raising environmental awareness, cleaning the area and recycling oil drums into rubbish bins.
Tonight features a concert with Sudanese bands at the International Cultural Village in Khartoum.
The celebration of International Volunteer Day will continue elsewhere in the Sudan in the coming days, with special events scheduled for Ed Damazin, Kadugli, Rumbek, Kapoeta and Juba.
Currently a total of 270 UNV volunteers are serving in UNMIS, including 32 Sudanese.
Sudanese NGOs participating are: Red Crescent, Fashoda, Rwfeida, Intishar Charity Society, Menath, Sudanese Organisation for Development and Non Violence, Patient Medical Support Fund, Creative Life Organisation, Sudanese Organisation for Art and Music Therapy.
