Ghana marks International Volunteer Day 
Accra, Ghana: UNV marked this year's International Volunteer Day with a blood donation exercise in Accra on Saturday. Mr. Emmanuel Oduro-Boakye, Communications Associate for UNDP, said the decision to organise the blood donation was in line with efforts to help attain Goal 6 of the Millennium Development Goals. Goal 6 calls for the stopping and reversing the spread of HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis and other major diseases, by 2015.  Visit site

Remarkable progress of volunteer movement in Jordan

Bringing together volunteers in Sri Lanka 
Colombo, Sri Lanka: UNV Sri Lanka Programme Officer Sarah Gleave says that some feel that volunteerism is becoming less important due to factors such as globalisation, but UNV sees it becoming increasingly important in this day and age.

"People are looking for ways to be more connected with their communities... In Sri Lanka volunteerism is embedded to the system," she says.

Indonesia and Australia coordinate voluntary activities 
Jakarta, Indonesia: Australia and Indonesia should combine forces in cooperation with voluntary organizations in the world to improve coordination in implementing voluntary activities in Indonesia.

"It must be done as a form of appreciation to millions of people spending their time as volunteers," Australian Ambassador to Indonesia Bill Farmer said in a written statement.

Shanghai firms join volunteer alliance by Wang Hongyi
Shanghai, China: The country's first volunteers' alliance between multinational firms was established in Shanghai to mark the 23rd International Volunteer Day.

The Make A Difference Alliance, initiated by the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai, is designed to encourage firms and their employees to organize charitable activities and campaigns across China.

Activities planned to mark Int’l Volunteer Day in Viet Nam 
Ha Noi, Viet Nam: A programme of activities to celebrate International Volunteer Day (IVD) 2008, which falls on 5 December, will take place in Ha Noi on December 7. Filling the need to help others by Tan Yingzi
Beijing, China: Li Shuo will never forget what she did this summer. "I was part of the Olympics," the 20-year-old student from the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine said.

Li was not an athlete taking part in the Games, but did what many would also think was equally meaningful - serving as a volunteer for her Olympic host city.

"I feel so lucky and proud to have been a part of such a historic event and it will probably be the most valuable chapter of my life," Li told China Daily Thursday, the eve of International Volunteer Day.

IVD in Belize

Ethiopia: Country joins International Volunteer Day by Fikremariam Tesfaye
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia: n some places, IVD will be marked with the launch of a week- or month-long campaign to promote volunteerism and recognize volunteers.

While underscoring volunteer contributions in development, the event will also discuss the role of volunteers in support of the development process of Ethiopia.
