Volunteers add cheer to children's lives in Bangladesh

by Raissa Muhutdinova

Dear Colleagues:

It is always a great inspiration to all of us to know that among the big family of UNV in Bangladesh there are individuals who not only have professional qualities, skills and knowledge but also have a humanitarian soul which drives them to care about those in need. In addition to their everyday activities such individuals go an "extra mile" to help most vulnerable with at least small things. I am referring to the story of Mr. Suvash Datta Chakma, a National UNV working in Panchari Upazila at CHTDF. He and his colleagues have celebrated International Volunteer Day in their own way.

Recently Suvash and his colleagues received Economic Opportunity Mission comprised of representatives of ILO, WFP and JOBS who came to Chittagong Hill Tracks to research the ways to help local communities to combat poverty through more economic opportunities. After visiting a “para” (locality) called Babura Para in Logang Union the guests have suggested as an immediate action to collect money and buy food for the children. However, Mr. Chakma has proposed to buy winter clothing for the poorest of the poor children from the para.

Having collected 1100 taka, Suvash and his colleagues could buy 10 warm sweaters, two footballs for boys and one carom board for girls.

With the assistance of the community facilitator of the UNDP-CHTDF Project, Suvash has identified 10 children from the five poorest of the poor families and on 5 December, the International Volunteer Day, they distributed the goodies to the children.

It does not matter how big or small is your contribution to the collective action, just remember: " Every Action Counts". Small drops make a big river.

I congratulate to Suvash and his colleagues and it is a great motivational learning for all of us, who are involve in humanitarian work. I am also working as National UNV in the CHT, based in Rangamati. Since January 2006 I have been working as UNV and my previous 4 years long works related to promotion of child rights, so this noble work really a great pleasure for me. I never miss this kind of opportunity, which I learned from you.

A time like this when dog eating dogs meat, it shows that still some have humanity in them. Specialy helping the children who are believed to be the reflection of GOD. I would be honored to get a chance like that. AND to those who sent comments i believe they are also very much ready to bloom to do this kind of act.

I hope many people will know about volunteerism and come up to help those especially in situations they are unable to help themselves. For volunteersism is giving back to the community who are in situations which needs immediate action, for they can be dying due to starvation or those who have been in conflict with war or poverty stricken.

I believe in volunteering and if given an opportunity am ready to help those in desperate situations if my services are required. Am also a volunteer at the Kenya Girl Guide which is one of the largest women organisations in the world.

I am also working with CHTDF, where Suvash working. I think it is a great job for Suvash. Most of the time we are busy with our assigned activities and don’t try to think more. So this job opens our eyes and spreading our volunteering concepts.

All over the world people talk much more than action regarding bring out the changes in the lives of children.More over by using/showing the problems in the lives of children many people having limited facilities and changing their own lives through corruption/deprivation/playing false/fake project etc.so find real way to resist them.thanks

Wow that's just great. in the long run no its not much. but if even one child gets a sweater & gets some relief from the winter ; who to say that its not worth it. i am very much interested to do volunteer work especially with disabled children ; to help them obtain skills to live a normal life. Cause i find they are more able than ppl who have all their faculties intact. But i can't find out from where to begin. can anybody give me suggestion?

I saw a comments of Lia Iftekar regarding the volunteerism. She might wants to work for disabled children or helpless(?). Anyway I would like appreciate her willingness. This is truth that as a human everybody has willingness to work for society. But we can not do for own business. So Suvash did a good job that he was doing his job and same time did great job by providing cloths...Basicaly this is a good example, we can do something behind our job. So Lia, carryon from your own position. And in Bangladesh NGO field based or program based job is very much relevant with this type of activities.
