The Service for Peace (SFP)-Kenya Chapter organized the celebrations marking the International Volunteer Day (IVD) on 5 December at the Gate of Hope orphan children’s home. The home takes care of 30 orphans: some of there were street children, others were orphaned when their parents died of HIV/AIDS. The home is located in the outskirts of the city of Nairobi, Kenya’s capital.

SFP-Kenya mobilized young volunteers (age 4-20 yrs) to participate in the IVD celebrations. The home benefited from items purchased for the home. These were 30 plants, five mango trees, gardening tools – rake, slashes for cutting grass, house cleaning items - mopping buckets and the mops, and also food: 50 kgs of rice.

The youthful orphans and other visiting volunteers from the village got engaged in taking care of the environment by carrying out a cleaning exercise in the orphans’ home and planting trees. The orphans planted 35 trees around their home compound.

It was a great occasion for the children as during the exercise the children discussed the benefits of trees such as: trees attract rainfall, help to maintain our rivers as water catchments, purify the air we need to breath, provide timber, provide material for the manufacturing of their school pencils and paper for their school books, firewood for the cooking of their meals etc. The benefits were endless!

As the day went on women volunteers prepared a wonderful meal, well spiced and served in the African buffet way. The orphans felt loved and appreciated in the company of the visiting children and adults.

As the day came to a close, the programme continued into the evening with song and dance. Finally, the day ended with a word of prayer for thanks.

Martin Luther King Junior states that a man only becomes a functional man when he is able to come out of his egocentricism and embrace the needs of his brothers in dire need of his help. It is with this that I would like to thank all the selfless men and women who are doing voluntary work to make the world a better place for through this we are able to heal the world.

Hats off to all those volunteers.

Iam also involved into some voluntary work from college.

The students are tomorrow's generation. They have to be groomed to make the world a better place.

I came across this site: www.qolhouston.org/default.asp. Just wanted to share it. It’s on an organization that is dedicated to planting trees along Houston's streets and freeways. It’s a sure check for all you people.

I was on a mission trip to the gate of hope children's home a few years back. I loved the kids there and I think about them every day. I truly miss them and loved to see that they are continuing to grow and get help any way possible.

I wish that one day I can make it back to see everyone. We did mime while we were there and the children loved it, they were shocked to see white people wearing white makeup, and loved it when we painted their face. they even put on their own mime acts. I miss them all...

I have been applying for this volunteering to help others and I don't mind to be located anywhere in the world as long as I can help those people in need specially country like Lebanon and Iraq. Everyday when I read newspapers, I surely get upset looking how cruel people are sometimes to let the women and children suffer in the unnecessary attacks. I wish I can really contribute my help towards these victims. Should any organization in here read this message of mine, I can be contacted at my email address at hayati@pempena.com.my at anytime. Thanks. With God bless.

I am a volunteer child officer in Westlands in charge of Kangemi slums. Thanks to those fellow volunteer all over the globe, I enjoy my work just like many other Kenyans, started by forming a volunteer group that helped in giving free tutorial services to adult learners. I later integrated the network and formed a volunteer team for child rights advocacy under the name Childhope Kenya.

I was later recruited by the Ministry of Home Affairs. I volunteer 80% of my time to children homes and child rights advocacy. If you are willing to volunteer please do that for our organisation especially by introducing us to people who are willing to assist children get their needs. A volunteer always accepts anything in kind or in material. Reach me through AAC Westlands office.

I salute all brothers and sisters who have given themselves the task of doing good to humanity through volunteering. Changing our society is an obligation of each and every individual and a calling of a few, this is why i want to get involved with your organization to help achieve its goals.

I am in my undergraduate degree at Kenyatta University doing a bachelors degree in Sociology, but i also run a youth organization called The Youth Clique whose main objective is to volunteer in any capacity.

I will be glad if i got an opportunty of partnering with you.

Thanks you guy for the good you are doing. I'm also an orphan and love doing voluntary work especially helping my fellow orphans. I've been thinking of how to come up with a network of orphans in Kenya but the support lacks. If you are of any help how this can be achieved please contact me on my email address and hope we can work towards achiving a common voice for all the orphans not only in kenya but also in Africa so that we can advocate for their rights as they remain ignored by the current policy makers. Thank you very much again.

I would like to first congratulate you for the good work your doing.however,as a student in university,i also would like to volunteer for the many needy people in my country. Many of us are often idle during our long break mainly from may to august yet we should be contributing to our needy brothers and sisters. I therefore request that if there is any volunteer job,it should be posted on the website.

I am a psychology student and would really like to work with children in orphanages,to deal with and advice people living with hiv/aids and the like

Thank you in advance.

AFRICAN CHILD INITIATIVE AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT FORUM is a community empowering programme working with self-help groups, income generating projects, host families, and the community in Kivaani location, Kangundo District, in Kenya, to support Government and donor efforts in order to eradicate poverty and improve the social and economic situation of the villagers.

We also work with the church, schools, and youth polytechnics as a focal point of civic education and modern communication networking. It is the forum where the villagers are making world wide contacts by hosting guests freely and exchanging cultural values. Our home stay programme have opened doors with contacts from all continents and in return some of our guests have participated in funding some of the community projects.
