My views on international volunteering
10 March 2006, 16:25
by Randolf

Sir/Madam,

It was with profound pleasure with which I read through your web site. As a matter of fact when I went through the articles trying to justify the world's millennium goals, I only felt it being very hypocritical. My personal observations tells me that the co-ordinators of volunteer programmes do well to discourage lots of people in developing countries from applying or succeeding in rendering their services.

It may sound funny that I am complaining. I was interested but have been discouraged. I have the talents, skills and the knowledge; both theory and practice. How was I discouraged? The co-ordinators believed that we in the developed countries, when we talk of volunteering, our services, we are looking for employment. If I may let you know, we are just waiting to heed to the call to humanity. Nothing short of that.

I don't know whether this complaint is in the right quarters, if not do me a favour to forward it to the right one. You may as well let me know if I am wrong in my assessments.

This moment I may only contribute in writing as a third world citizen.

Yours sincerely,

Randolf

Yes, I have the same view as you. May be I shall concentrate on my joining the Tzuchi Buddhist Charity Organisation which welcomes any body, regardless of one's religion, to help them to run their humanitarian work be it donation in cash or food or clothing or labour. They always practise "respect and be grateful for those who give us merit to help them".

greetings

i do surpport the view that most coordinators believe that we in the developing countries are just looking for a means of being employed which is not true. there is this old adage that says he who wears the shoes know where it pinches. Having been born and brought up in the developing countries we do understand fully the suffering of our people and that's why we want to help.

hello

i want to say just about the volunteer day. It is a day whcih tell us that we need help in all matters as human beings we are. if we are kind to each other this world is too much loving and open heart for us so i feel if i am volunteer then i am lucky person who does some thing in my life just not for me but for life of other human beings. If we help each other then we can get the world in new look without any problems just a beautiful earth with peace any where.

As a human if we dont help any person then we lost our missions of life. A human and volunteer is a person who can say that we are all human volunteers.

ok May Allah Bless us with this thinking, then we can make our missions possible and we have made landmarks in our lives.

This opinion on volunteers from developing countries tells me that I am not alone in this thinking. I voluntered for a medical charity organisation in Nigeria as a physician for four years and which pays no allowances. The joy in it was in helping your countrymen who are much less priviledged with the skills you have. Please, a good assessment of applicants from developing countries will tell who is doing it merely as a means to employment or not, do not deny us the opportunity of helping, even in the international scope as we have a lot to offer and have had more interactions with the less priviledged than our western counterparts.

Being a person from one of the developing countries who believes that it is naturally fulfilling to contribute to humanity by volunteering, I feel discouraged that such a well meaning gesture could be seen a means of seaching for employment as a result of which co-ordinators discourage people from developing countries from applying or succeeding in participating. My belief is that no matter how many people volunteer from developed countries, the contribution of one person from a developing country might go a long way. Please let the co-ordinators make this a food for thought.

Hola, from Ecuador! I am Japanese working as a volunteer.Randolf,I do not know you are UNV or other organization, but you do not need feel dismay. And also you do not have to determine your country a divelopment country.I thik it is only the bureaucratic crassification. Each country has both merit and demerit, as you know.I can understand your dismay, indignation and sadness in your situation. Because I also feel like a dismay like you,in spite of I am from "Advanced country". Why? Because I feel that country office believe that I am working for my carrer. No. I am not working for my carrer. If I need carrer, I did not retire from my job in my country. I am working for make good use of my experience, with pride of professional. So I think many volunteer fell as you not a little. And also I think the assessment diference by nation is not suit for our job. Because brilliant person is brilliant in any country. Write your coment when you feel dismay.Because this blog is also for shareing the personal opinion(of course, except slander), not only for activity information. Cheer up!

Dear Randolf,

I do not fully agree with you. I am from South Africa and have good contacts to volunteer overseas, e.g. USA. From which country are you? - maybe I can assist you. I am also looking for 1st world volunteers (and South Africans) to participate in numerous volunteer projects in South Africa.

best regards
