It is getting easier to volunteer in Hong Kong. You can now go to www.ho-sum.org and find one-time or on-going volunteer opportunities. To participate, you have to become a volunteer member first. We regularly publish articles that illustrate volunteers’ impact - individually and collectively. But a recent research showed that some volunteers don’t value their experiences. A study done by UK’s Chartered Management Institute and the international volunteer-sending organization VSO, reveal that some individuals fail to capitalize on their volunteering experiences.

Who is the true volunteer – somebody who has “less” but gives more? Isn’t it enough to “spare” some months or years of your life to help others to be called a volunteer? Current promotions of volunteerism, whether in rich or poor countries, are focused primarily on government-endorsed activities: the state or large corporations, through their sponsorship of such campaigns, encourage people to work without pay to address community and social needs, the gain being a better community, improved self-esteem for the volunteer, and less money needed to pay for such action, as volunteers aren't paid.

It's an appallingly limited view of what volunteering is and its true importance and power, and it's no wonder that the unemployed and the disenfranchised scoff at such campaigns.

Sri Lanka's Chamindra de Silva and another volunteer developer are arriving in Islamabad today to deploy Sahana that is a Free and Open Source Software disaster management system that handles missing/displaced persons, camp management, assistance, trading system, etc. These are the lead developers for the same system, which was used in Sri Lanka to coordinate aid for the Tsunami disaster.     Read entry
