A million urged to fight poverty
28 December 2005

London, UK: Development charity Oxfam is calling for a million people to support a new campaign to fight world poverty. It wants people to either volunteer, donate money or fight for change as part of its "I'm in" campaign.

The charity says it wants to build on support for this year's Make Poverty History push and capitalize on people's generosity after the Asian tsunami.

Despite deals on debt and aid, Oxfam wants to see more done on fair trade to reduce poverty in the longer term.

Oxfam says the need to allow poorer nations to trade free from the tariffs and trade barriers that prevent their economies growing should not be forgotten in 2006.

Campaigns director Adrian Lovett said: "To actually overcome poverty, it's not something we'll achieve in a year.

"What we have achieved in the last 12 months has been pretty remarkable, but we think that if enough people show that they weren't just interested in these issues for a brief period, that they are committed to seeing change and to keeping up the pressure for that change then we think that in the end will have an impact."

Following the Make Poverty History Campaign, the world's richest nations - the G8 - agreed a package of measures to cancel the debts and increase aid for some of the world's poorest nations.

But efforts to ensure fair trade, the third prong of the campaign, were not so successful.

Although at a recent World Trade Organisation meeting in Hong Kong, the richer nations did agree to end farm export subsidies by 2013.

I'm disapponted that, out of all the organizations, none of you have options for people who want to help but have nothing to give but their time and effort. I'm in school but would like to help overseas during summer break. I will also donate my time and what little money I have to charitys locally and globaly during my school year when I cannot leave my city!

the fight against poverty is misdirected in Nigeria, by not dealing directly with the poor people, thereby leaving the programme at the mercy of corrupt politicians.

Poverty is of course the main problem that the whole world should stoutlly fight, because it is worse than the HIV/AIDS virus. To properly implement a fight against poverty and to achieve proper results, let organizations like Oxfam deal directly with the communities using traditional rulers and village heads and including town unions to make such policies that have direct bearing on the poor poeple especially in the rural eareas.

In that way corrupt politicians will be eliminated from diverting the funds meant for the programme or truncating the good idea of figthing poverty esp. in Africa.

Thank you for giving me this chance to contribute .

I am happy to hear everybody concerned about poverty eradication. This is a very hard task which should be dealt with from all perspectives. I would like those who seriously want to fight poverty to start from rural areas. They should go direct to rural and support the rural people. This will expose the rural communities and they will work hard.Poverty sometimes comes through laziness, lack of exposure and ignorance. All these are found in the rural communities. Let fighting poverty not be for the rich while the poor are relaxed waiting to be given aid.Let us work all of us hard and be confident that it will come to an end (the poor and the rich, the developed countries and the developing)

Thanks,

Ignorance is the biggest "disease."I used to stay in town and could not understand why there was soo much poverty in my rural home.We decided to go and do a research in the rural and we came up with a committe to eradicate poverty. It is actually terrible in the rural where people don't know of family planning,HIV/AIDS and people are ignorant and unexposed. We have started doing afew activities in my rural community and things are moving on well apart from afew challengas. Am now staying there to try as much as possible to reduce ignorance. The youth should wake up since they are the country's investment.Change attitude and be focused, initiative and literate. For more information about BOHAPO (a registered community based organisation) please check our website www.bohapo.org
